Abstract

This thesis focuses on both James Joyce’s Ulysses and Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway as stream of consciousness novels. Both novels focus on one city, Dublin for Ulysses and London for Mrs. Dalloway. Both Joyce and Woolf are considered revolutionary novelists in the sense that they do not follow the conventional narrative techniques adopted by most writers. Chapter one is concerned with the analysis of characterization in the two novels. The three major characters of Ulysses are based upon those of Homer’s Odyssey. Joyce is interested in the relation between mind and body and its impact upon artistic creation. The conflict between authority and independence is the principle of Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway. Chapter two examines the manipulation of time and place in the two novels. Although both Ulysses and Mrs. Dalloway take place in only one day, their events cover the past, present and even the future of the main characters. Of course, there are some techniques used by the two authors to achieve unity out of the apparent chaos of the stream of consciousness technique. Chapter three deals with symbolic structures. The chapter gives three types of symbols: symbolic characters, actions and settings. It also sheds light on the mythical, Biblical and literary references of those symbols. Finally, the conclusion sums up the findings of the research regarding the differences and similarities between James Joyce’s Ulysses and Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway.
