Abstract

Background: Although cancer of testis is the most common form of cancer among men aged 15-35 years and the incidence is increasing, health care providers rarely teach testicular self-examination (TSE) procedure to clients, thus potentially missing opportunities for early detection. This form of cancer is easily diagnosable by testicular self-examination and is a highly treatable disease if detected in early stage. However, the public awareness about testicular cancer and its preventive practices is very low. Periodic self-examination must be performed for early detection. Aim: design health education booklet about preventive practice of male students regarding testicular cancer in Mansoura University. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted among (424) male students at Mansoura University, Egypt. The study was conducted from September to December 2014. Results: The mean age of the studied students was 19.68± 1.64 years, more than half lived at rural areas, most of studied students were single and almost two third of them belonged to middle socio economic level. The participants showed poor score level of knowledge in relation to definitions; types; function of testis; testicular cancer incidence age; risk factors; manifestations; diagnosis; treatment; prevention of testicular cancer; testicular self examination meaning, importance, describing testicular self-examination, proper time to perform, proper interval duration of conducting and abnormal founding during testicular self-examination. Also the most of the studied students (95.5%) showed improper performance of testicular self-examination. Finally, most of studied students reported positive attitude toward testicular cancer and its preventive practices Conclusion: The main conclusion drawn from the current study is that the majority of the studied students had poor score level of knowledge regarding testicular cancer and its preventive practices, poor performance of testicular self-examination. Recommendations: It is recommended to apply health educational program to university male students focusing on improving their knowledge of TC and practice of TSE for early detection of TC. The college environment is an ideal place to implement intervention strategies that incorporate the messages about testicular cancer; therefore this topic is very important to be included into curriculum.
