Abstract

The present work is an experimental study on drying in jetting fountain fluidized bed and in conventional fluidized bed as well. The experiments are carried out using a fluidized bed of 110 mm inner diameter. Fenugreek seeds are used as bed materials to be dried. In all tests, the bed height is 250 mm. The influences of different parameters on drying process have been investigated. Those include bed temperature (40, 60, 80) , jet mass air ratio (20, 30, 40, 50)%, jet height(40 ,80 ,120 ,160 ,200 ,240) mm and air flow rate (0.015 0,02 ,0.025) kg/s. In jetting fountain configuration, a quantity of air is introduced through a jet pipe, the remaining air is fed via the distributor plate to fluidize bed. Jetting-fountain configuration is characterized by excellent gas-solids contact. This feature is thanks to creating a jet in the upper part of the bed, establishing a fountain in the freeboard and moderating bubbles size in the main bed. The obtained results demonstrate that the performance of jetting fountain is considerably better compared to conventional fluidized bed. Jetting fountain configuration enables greater drying rates and more efficient energy utilization. Jetting fountain fluidized bed enhances drying process where the moisture loss can be increased up to 30% over conventional fluidized bed. Drying rate increases with the increase in the total air mass rate. Drying rate also becomes at higher temperature. The drying rate attains an optimal at 40% jet air ratio under the considered conditions. The drying process reaches the best performance at jet orifice height of 12 cm under the considered conditions. In jetting fountain fluidized bed, the energy utilization ratio can be increased up to 10% over conventional fluidized bed.
