Abstract

Introduction : This thesis focuses on merging the characteristics of liquid crystals with those of photonic crystal fibers in order to develop optical devices with unique characteristics and high efficiency compared to similar traditional devices. Two designs have been suggested. The first is an optical coupler wavelength division. The other is an optical temperature sensor based on surface plasmon technology. Numerical methods have been used to theoretically study and analyze each device. It has been shown that both devices have high efficiency and better performance than the preceding ones beside being applicable. The research problem : The study and analysis of electromagnetic waves propagating through liquid crystal based photonic crystal fibers. And then the research aims : Design of two models based on merging photonic crystal fibers with liquid crystals. One model represents an optical coupler Multiplexer demultiplexer, while the other is an optical temperature sensor based on surface plasmon technology. It is also required to ensure the efficiency of each model and its applicability. Steps of study : First, the two models are suggested with arbitrary structural parameters. Then, numerical analysis is done for each model to ensure that the system outcomes which are : device length and cross talk values for the coupler, and the temperature sensitivity for the temperature sensor. After that, the structural parameters are adjusted to obtain the optimum design for each model. The study concludes : Applying numerical analysis on each model using different structural parameters, it is concluded that : The optical coupler model has a very short device length of 436 μm and acceptable crosstalk values. Additionally, the optical temperature sensor has a very high sensitivity of 10 nm/℃ compared to other temperature sensors.
