Abstract

Despite known different surgical approaches and options for repair of different types of diaphragmatic hernias, yet there was no sufficient studies in order to integrate the advantages and disadvantages of each technique and help to reach the method that has the best effect on the short-term and long-term outcome.
So we aimed to explain and evaluate the different surgical modalities for repair and finally it was concluded that both open abdominal and thoracic approaches can be used with superiority of each approach over the other in certain cases.
Also repair of the diaphragmatic defect either by direct closure or prosthetic mesh nearly has the same outcome on the patients regards the need for ICU admission and duration of hospital stay but patients who underwent repair by mesh require more hospital stay. whatever this results we concur that the use of mesh in repair of diaphragmatic defects has its own indications despite the disadvantages of prolonged hospital stay and the probability of postoperative infection. It was concluded also that patients with traumatic diaphragmatic hernia stay more in hospital than patients with congenital diaphragmatic hernia we give explanation to this because of other traumatic injuries which require more care in the hospital.
