Abstract

Hydatidosis is a parasitic infection caused by a larval form of the tapeworm, Echinococcus granulosus, which is characterized by long-term growth of metacestode (hydatid) cysts in the intermediate host. Hydatid disease (Echinococcosis) is an endemic disease in the sheep and cattle raising countries in Middle East, North Africa, New Zealand, Australia, and South America.
In case of hydatid cysts the incidence is 59-75% in the liver, 27% in the lung, 3% in the kidney, and 1-2% in the brain. Bone involvement in hydatidosis occurs in less than 1% of the patients.
Clinical diagnosis of cystic echinococcosis (CE) is frequently difficult, hence always supported by imaging and immunological methods such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Use of magnetic microbeads based offer the potential advantage of improving the sensitivity of the assay.
