Abstract

Background: Medications are part of the patient treatment plan, appropriate management about it is critical to ensure patient safety. High-alert medications (HAM) are drugs that bear a heightened risk of causing significant patient harm when they are used in error. Aim: The present study aims at assessing knowledge and performance of the staff nurses regarding international standards in dealing with HAM, designing a training program based on their needs assessment, examining the training program validity by experts, implementing the designed program and assessing the effect of the program on nurses’ knowledge and performance of dealing with HAM. Subjects: 180 nurses were included in the study. Setting: The study was conducted in the International Medical Center (IMC) which affiliated to ministry of defence with total 850 beds for inpatient, outpatient and critical care units. Methods: Four tools were used to collect data for this study; needs’ assessment tool, pre/post and follow up test, observational checklist and experts’ opinnionaire sheet. Results: Immediately after program implementation, nurses’ knowledge and performance have highly statistically significant improvement regard different dimensions reflecting dealing with HAM, with slightly declined in knowledge at the follow up phase but still higher than pre program phase. Conclusion: The present study assured that the training program was effective in improving staff nurses knowledge and performance when dealing with HAM. Recommendation: Establish list of HAM used in the hospital, enhance concept of teamwork among all healthcare professionals and establish a clinical pharmacist service in each department
