المستخلص

The researcher explores “homonym” as a rhetorical term that belongs to the heritage of Arabic, and its circulation in many different arts, especially rhetorics. He tries to investigate the original sources of “homonyms” in the heritage of Arabic, especially in the works of the Arab linguists, traditionalists and rhetoricians. The study is mainly descriptive and historical, in which the researcher tries to achieve an analysis of some “homonyms”, with the purpose of enriching the lexical dimension of the phenomenon.
The researcher, then, explores the “homonym” in its rhetorical relations with the other figures of speech like: “simile, metaphor and metonymy”, in the heritage of the Arabic. Then he proceeds to explore the “homonyms” in the light of modern semantic theories, most important of which is the semantic categories especially in the classification of the phenomenon, as well as the context, particularly in its analysis. This leads to explaining the interrelationship of the phenomenon of “homonyms” with other rhetorical phenomena like: “complete alliteration, double entendre, and al-istikhdam, as well as those terms which refer to the general and the particular at the same time).
The researcher also attempts to show the aesthetic dimension of the use of “homonyms”, as structuring the poem on one word, like (the eye “el’eyn”, uncle “el-Khal”, and the aged man “el-ajouz”). The word “rhyme” with its repetitions, and passing of the various meanings across it, takes it away from “el-sinad” as one of the defects of rhyme, and inserts them in the categories of rhetoric.
The researcher attempts to show the role of the “homonyms” in revealing the ambiguity which may engulf the Qur’anic or literary text, revealing also the lexical contributions of ancient and modern rhetoricians. The researcher notices that there is an urgent need of a general Arabic lexicon concentrating on explaining the “homonyms” in Arabic in general and the language of the holy Qur’an in particular.
The researcher also tries to explain some important, but unfamiliar sources of the heritage of Arabic, like the book entitled “The Revelation of double entendre and “Isti-khdam” (Fadh alkhitam an eltaoriya wa al’estikhdam) by Khalil el-Din el-Safady, who employed the “homonym” from a rhetoric perspective; because that book did not receive a satisfactory investigation.
Due to the fact that the context of traditionalist jurists is the nearest to the context of the rhetoricians in analyzing the phenomenon of “homonyms”; this has an influence on deducing legal judgments, on which the researcher concentrated. However, the efforts of the exegetics of the holy Qur’an, and analysts of poetry, are in need of more efforts of researchers to get acquainted with the methods of the exegetics and analysts in dealing with the phenomenon.
The researcher sees that “homonyms”, is one of the phenomena which deserves the efforts of the editors of manuscripts in which words bear different meanings according to their temporal contexts, which sometimes may take them on to paradoxes.
