Abstract

The present work was planned to study the effect of curcumin on body performance, hematological, biochemical and histopathological changes in healthy and carbon tetrachloride toxicity in rabbits. The study was carried out on 125, six weeks old healthy male New Zealand white rabbits., which were divided into 5 groups (1-5). Group (1) was15 rabbits kept as normal control. The second group (n=15) was given curcumin (3 gm/kg diet) daily from first day of experiment for 8 weeks. The third group (n=45) was injected s.c with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) 0.4 ml/kg b.wt dissolved in liquid paraffin (1:1) day after day from the end of 2nd week of the experiment for 4 weeks. The fourth group (n=25) was injected s.c with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) day after day from the end of 2nd week of the experiment for 4 weeks and curcumin daily from the end of 2nd week till the end of the experiment at the same dose as groups 2&3. The fifth group (n=25) was given curcumin then CCl4 at the same doses and duration as groups 2&3. Two blood samples were collected from the marginal ear vein of rabbits in all groups at the end of the 4th , 6th and 8th weeks of experiment. The first sample was collected in a clean tube containing sodium salt of EDTA for hematological examination and antioxidant determination in plasma. The second sample was collected freshly without anticoagulant for separation of serum for biochemical analysis. Specimens from liver, kidney, spleen and intestine were collected immediately from five animals from each group after sacrificing at the end of 4th , 6th and 8th weeks of experiment for histopathological examination. Rabbits in gps. (1&2) did not show any clinical signs. While, gp.(3) showed anorexia, depression, rough fur, inappetance and loss of body weight throughout the experimental periods. Gps.(4&5) showed the same clinical signs as in the 3rd group but less in severity. Gps. (1 and 2) showed no mortalities during the experimental periods. While, the mortality rate were 60%, 32% and 16% in gps. (3-5) respectively.
