Abstract Background Obesity has become an increasing problem in adults as a result of more sedentary lifestyles and inadequate dietary habits. Aim of the work: The present study was carried out to determine the relationship of timing of meals and obesity among middle age (18-40 years) attendants at obesity clinic in National nutrition institute in Egypt. Subjects and Methods: A case control study was done. 172 cases (BMI≥30) from National Nutrition Institute and 172 controls(BMI: 18.5-24.9) from primary health care center matched in age and gender were included. A questionnaire form was designed to explore the timing of having meals .Anthropometric measurement (weight,height and waist circumference ) were taken from all participants. Results: The study revealed that 94.7% of cases ate breakfast late after 10am while in controls only 9.5%. About the time of lunch meal 90% of cases had lunch after 3pm while in controls were 25.3% .The cases percentage ate dinner late after 10pm were 89.1% while controls were 3.6% respectively. On the other hand, there were inversed correlations between BMI and sleeping more at the night time Conclusion: sleeping less than 6 hours per day and eating dinner after 8pm before sleeping were the most important independent predictors for obesity. |
