Abstract Summary Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic autoimmune disease characterized by inflammation of connective tissue, typically with periods of remission and exacerbation. An autoimmune disorder, rheumatoid arthritis occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the own body’s tissues. In addition to causing joint problems, sometimes can affect other organs of the body such as the skin, eyes, lungs and blood vessels. Patients’ education is a dynamic, integrated and multifaceted teaching-learning process in which the nurse and patient work together to change patients’ behaviors through their functional status with medical instruction. Health education is an independent function of nursing practice and a primary nursing responsibility. All nursing care is directed toward promoting, maintaining, and restoring health, preventing complications, and helping patients adapt to the residual effect of illness. Many of these nursing activities are accomplished through patients’ education. Nurses in their role as teachers are challenged to focus on the educational needs of patients with rheumatoid arthritis and providing them specific health education which is important Summary 990 because it includes the following benefits: affects the abilities of patients and their families to perform important self- care activities, promoting their knowledge and functional status at home and in the community, reducing health care costs by preventing complication. Aim of the study: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of educational program on knowledge and functional status of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Research hypothesis: The current study hypothesized that: Educational program will positively affect the knowledge of patients with rheumatoid arthritis Educational program will positively affect functional status of patients with rheumatoid arthritis Study design: A quasi experimental design was utilized to meet the aim of the study. Setting: Summary 999 The study was conducted at rheumatoid outpatient clinic and rehabilitation department of Ain Shames University Hospital, affiliated to Ain Shams University Subjects: A purposive sample of 115 patients with rheumatoid arthritis from the rheumatoid outpatient clinic and rehabilitation department of Ain Shams University Hospital was recruited for conducting this study. Study tools: 1. Patients’ demographic and clinical characteristics sheet : This sheet was developed by the researcher in Arabic language to assess patients’ socio-demographic and clinical characteristic. It consists of two parts: First part: concerned with patient’s demographic data. Second part: concerned with medical history of patients. 2. Rheumatoid arthritis knowledge assessment questionnaire: This questionnaire used to assess patients’ knowledge regarding rheumatoid arthritis and therapeutic regiment pre, post and 3 month post the educational program. It was developed by the researcher in Arabic language based on reviewing of recent related literatures. Summary 991 3. Health assessment questionnaire sheet (HAQ) This tool was used to assess functional ability for patients with rheumatoid arthritis pre, post and three month after implementation of the educational program. Results of this study showed that: - The present study revealed that there was highly statistically significant difference between number of patients’ with satisfactory level of knowledge about rheumatoid arthritis before and after implementation of educational program, particularly, knowledge related to self care strategies - There were non significant differences between patient’s knowledge regarding diagnostic measures, before and after implementation of educational program. - There was highly statistically significant differences between the mean and standerd deviation of functional status items scores concerning personal hygiene, grooming, self-care activities, general activities, occupational activities and recreational activities for the study sample pre and post implementation of educational program. Summary 991 -There are non significant differences between the mean and standard deviation of functional status items scores concerning eating and toileting. This study concluded that: Application of educational program regarding rheumatoid arthritis has positive effect on improving knowledge of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Application of educational program has positive effect on improving all aspects of functional status. The study recommended that Summary 991 Replication of the current study on a larger probability sample is recommended to achieve generalization of the results and wider utilization of the designed program.
