Allah Almighty says, ” And among his signs is this, that
he created for you mates from among yourselves, that ye may dwell in tranguility with them, and He
has put love and mercy between your (hearts): verily in that are Signs for those who reflect.”
(30:21).
He, the highly exalted, planted, in the bosom of both sexes an affection, love and need for one
another so that they wholeheartedly gravitate towards each other in.the hope of finding peace,
reassurance, tranquility and stability. In so doing, man seeks a happy family life, the dream that
is long cherished by the youths before they face married life in reality. It is then that they go
beyond blissful dreams to an often disappointing actuality where the spouses see each other in a
new light away from the dream-like pre-marriage halo; differences in temperaments, ends,
dispositions and inclina­ tions grow conspicuous and sharp, often turning the rosy dream into a
life rife with differences, dissension and squabble that ultimately dashes all hope in happiness
and sometimes destroys the bond of matrimony a year or so after the begin­ ning of married life
with all its sweet dreams.
This study is, therefore, concerned with defining the rela­ tion between the conception of the
youths before marriage and the extent of matrimonial adjustment, or rather the expecta­ tions of
the youth before and after marriage and their rela­ tion to matrimonial adjustment. Our purpose
is to forecast such adjustment to determine in advance the success or failure of a would- be
marriage through the pre- marriage expectations and conceptions of the married couple. In this way,
