Abstract

Two experiments were carried out to study the effects of fusilade on the growth and yield of faba
bean or grasp on the growth and yield of wheat. Presowing treatment of seeds of both crops was
applied using the amino acids: arginine, lysine and methionine, each at two concentrations (50,
1OOppm). This was followed by foliar spray of plants (one-month-old) with their respective
herbicides. The results obtained indicated that both herbicides prevailed adverse effects on the
growth, yield and metabolism of the crop plants. Amino acid treatments proved to be extremely
efficient in alleviating the negative effects of fusilade on faba bean and grasp in wheat. In
this respect, methionine induced best performance, followed by arginine. In addition the relatively
low concentration of each amino acid was more effective than the higher. Endogenous polyamines
(putrescine, spermidine and spermine) were assumed to be involved in the cascade of de
toxification ofthe herbicides by the crop plants.
