Abstract

Odontonema cuspidatum is a perennial shrub and attains 6 feetr in height. Stems are sub-quadrangular, pilose and moderate stems are glabrate. Leaves are opposite decussate, petiolate, blades are elliptic to ovate, glabrous while margin is entire to undulate. The inflorescence is a terminal raceme or panicle with 3 to many flowers in fascicles; the flowers are red in color. The flowering season is November and the fruiting is unknown.
The present work includes: DNA profiling, botanical study, phytochemical study and biological study.
Part I: DNA profilking, including study of DNA fingerprint of the plant under investigation together with different four genera of family acanthaceae.
Part II: Botanical study, including: macro- and Micromorphological studies of the different parts of Odontonema cuspidatum (Nees) Kuntze (leaves, stems and inflorescence), aiming to identify the plant in both entire and powdered forms.
Part III: Phytochemical study, including: preliminary phytochemical screening, estimation of total phenolic content, estimation of total sterol contents in addition to extraction, fractionation, isolation of the main constituents of the plant and identification of the isolated constituents.
