Abstract Ovarian carcinoma is the leading cause of cancer related deaths in women mainly due to late diagnosis. Of all gynecological malignancies, it has the lowest overall survival rate. There’s no enough information regarding the etiologic mechanisms involved in cancer of the ovary, but in general, women with positive family history, nulliparity, late menopause and greater than 40 ovulation years have increased ovarian cancer lifetime risk. Epithelial ovarian carcinoma accounts for 85°/o to 90°/o of the total cases with cancer ovary and it originates from the covering epithelium of the ovary. Its commonest type is serous cystadenocarcinoma. Ovarian cancer is an insidious disease, it’s asymptomatic in its early stages but may cause non specific symptoms such as gastrointestinal and urinary disturbances, vaginal bleeding, weight loss, making late diagnosis is the rule. The primary surgery is to be followed by radiotherapy depending on the size of the residual tumor. Radiation therapy plays an important role in the adjuvant treatment of ovariancancer patients who have achieved optimal cytoreduction of their tumors to less than 2 em in diameter.... |
