Abstract

The aim of this study to was investigate the effect of some preservative solutions i.e Nano Silver , Silver thiosulphate (STS), Neem ,Norbornadiene (NBD) , UV irradiation and storage temperature as simulate transportation to improve the keeping quality of the flowers, enhance water uptake deal leaf wilting and yellowing and extend the shelf life period of sweet pea and celosia cut flowers The present work included two experiments on two kinds of cut flowers [ Sweet pea (Lathyrus odoratus ,L.) and Celosia (Celosia argentea , L) cut flowers] . In the 1st Experiment: The longest vase life of sweet pea cut flowers was obtained by pulsing flowers in nano Ag+ (8x103) at 10 ml/l for 1 hr.. Treatments can be arranged in descending order i.e., nano Ag+ (8x103) at 10, 5 and 1 ml/l > STS for 15,10 and 5 min > norbornadiene (NBD) at 2,5 and 10 ml/l > Neem at 2, 5 and 10 ml/l. The flower opening (%) increased with extending their shelf life periods up to 12th day. Dipping flowers in neem (azal /t 5% Azedirachtin) at 2 and 5cm/l for 1hr., then holding in vase solution recorded high level of flower opening (%) and carotenoids in leaves of sweet pea cut flowers. In 2nd Experiment : the longest vase life were was obtained by pulsing flowers in 50 ml/l nano Ag+ , STS 1:4 mM for 1 hrs. In this regard, treatments can be arranged in descending order i.e. nano Ag+ (8x103) at 25 and 50 ml/l, STS 1:4 mM for 1 hrs, UV irradiation for 30 and 60 min and potassium silicate at 12.5, 25 and 50 mg/l for 24 hr., then transferred to storage at 5 , 10 0C for one week and 0-time treatments after that hold in holding solution (15% sucrose +200mg/l 8-HQS +150mg/l C.A) to complete their shelf life duration. Moreover, nano Ag+ and STS pulsing solutions with 0-time treatment recorded higher rate than flowers which stored at 5 , 10 0C for one week. However, storage at 5 0C suitable for celosia cut flowers than storage at 10 0C which increase daily fresh weight , daily solution uptake (g/flower), total chlorophyll (mg/g f.w.) and reduced sugars on cut flowers. The correlation coefficients between flower longevity, fresh weight, water uptake, flower opening, reducing sugars and total chlorophyll were studies. Mostly, treatments under this study, improved flowers quality enhanced water uptake, increased flowers opening, delayed leaf wilting and increased longevity of sweet pea and celosia cut flowers.
