Abstract

BCC and SCC represent the most common malignant neoplasm of the skin. SCC is a biologically aggressive tumor that usually metastasizes to the regional lymph nodes while BCC is characterized by local invasion and contagious spread. Maspin is a member of the serpin family of protease inhibitors. It is synthesized by normal epithelial cells of a variety of mammalian organs such as mammary gland, prostate, skin and cornea, but it is down-regulated during cancer progression. The aim of this work is to evaluate maspin expression in basal and cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas to throw light on its role in pathogenesis of these carcinomas by immunohistochemistery. The current study was carried out on 30 paraffin blocks were collected from Pathology Department Tanta University which divided in to the following groups: group I, ten paraffin blocks of BCC, group II, ten paraffin blocks of SCC, and ten paraffin blocks of normal healthy skin.. Histological and immunohistochemical staining were applied on paraffin blocks prepared from the tissues of previous tumours as well as skin of normal controls. The primary antibody was mouse monoclonal antibody. Clinical results: As regards the age; in group I (BCC) i t ranged from 45-86 years with a mean age of 62.90 ±15.63 years, in group II (SCC), it ranged from 40-75 with a mean age of 61.70±12.92 years, in group III control). it ranged from 29-56 years with a mean age of 41.90±8.53 years.
