Abstract Nobody denies that vehicles are considered one of the major components in our everyday life. This is particularly, when students and employees are going to their work and schools. They have to stay for long times waiting for their buses. This waiting time depends on many factors (e.g., street status, and population). This work has proposed a system called “Waiting at Home” (W@H) to help users to arrive at time and spend there waiting time at home. This proposed system makes an integration of the Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning System (GPS), General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), and the communication technology in the system architecture configuration. The GPS is used as an essential element in identifying the bus location and to predetermine the locations of waiting stations and the locations of the service users. Moreover, the spatial data about the locations of the bus stations, residential areas, and street network were collected, analyzed and integrated in the GIS system. The W@H system sends alert messages to the service users before the arrival of their buses by an enough time. The W@H system is functioning automatic without human intervention. It was found that the developed system has reduced the waiting time in the streets or at the vehicle stations from. The persons involved in this system were able to know when the bus will arrive and when to leave their homes to catch it. This is done through sending SMS messages to their mobile phones. The system also has been developed in the case of a barrier or an accident on the main road of the path of the vehicle that is a suitable choice for an alternative route in terms of distance, time and contributes to reduce waiting time. |
