Abstract

This thesis is an attempt to make a contribution in the field of phonology and show the importance of Arabic language as learned by non-native speakers.
This study presents a description of a number of phonological elements of non native speakers who learned Arabic as a foreign language. The participants in this study have studied Arabic as a foreign language for periods ranging from one to seven years. Their goals might vary between economic, political or merely language learning. The study examined American students’ performance of Arabic conversational discourse. The data for this study came from two sources; the first was a formal interview with each of the participant and the second was observing the participants use Arabic with each other, with other native speakers of Arabic and with the examiner before the recording of the data. The researcher used a checklist in order to elicit data ranging from phonetic inventory, syllabic structure and phonological rules as segmental phonological elements.
The thesis was divided into six chapters including;
Chapter one is an introduction about second language acquisition and the learning of Arabic as a second language for non-native speakers. It also includes the aim of the work along with the limitations and objectives of the study.
Chapter two is a review of the previous literature concerning the field of teaching Arabic as a second language for foreigners.
Chapter three deals with the methodology of the research and the analysis of the speech data.
Chapter four deals with the results of the research and the analysis of the given speech data.
Chapter five presents the conclusion of the research and the recommendations for further studies.
Chapter six includes the references used in the research and that helped to present the study as it looks now
