Abstract

Ventral hernias are those occurring in the anterior (ventral) abdominal wall .The introduction of laparoscopic technique is used as an alternative technique to open surgery. The laparoscopic ventral hernia repair is now widely performed and this may translate into benefits for the patients from the use of laparoscopic surgery in which there is less operative time, shorter hospital stay, improved the patient outcome and fewer complications when compared to open hernia repair.
In view of the above, this study was conducted to assess the laparoscopic repair of ventral hernia in comparison with open repair.
To achieve this aim, 40 patients were included in this study divided into 2 groups; group I, which included 20 patients (6 males and 14 females) with ventral hernia who were operated by open repair and group II, which included 20 patients (4 males and 16 females) with ventral hernia who were operated by laparoscopic repair.
The number of female patients in this study was higher than male patients in both groups. In both groups. Incisional hernias represent most of the cases of ventral hernias in both groups; 10 in group I and 12 in group II, Paraumbilical hernias; 8 in group I and 6 in group II and Epigastric hernias are 2 in group I and 2 in group II.
Operative time of open repair (115 minutes) was longer than that of laparoscopic repair (105 minutes). However, this difference is statistically insignificant but the operative time of open repair of incisional hernia was longer than that of laparoscopic repair and this difference is statistically significant.
