Abstract

Reproductive inefficiency is the most constraint to efficient rabbit
production in the tropics. The efficiency of sperm production, libido and
quality of sperm tend to remain uniform throughout the reproductive life of
an animal but may be significantly altered due to administration of some
drugs.
Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) are synthetic compounds which
are based on the structure of testosterone, and are used to increase energy and
muscle mass.
The present study was designed to evaluate the effects of low and
high doses of nandrolone decanoate (ND) administration on body weight,
semen quality, gene expression of AR and CYP 3A and testicular pathology
as well as serum biomarkers of hepatic and kidney functions.
The present study was carried out on 40 apparently healthy mixed
bred male rabbits during summer season and weighting from 2500-3000 g at
animal reproduction research institute. The experimental rabbits were divided
into four groups each group included 10 rabbits.
Each Animal was housed inside individual stainless-steel cages with
wire walls and feed concentrates (experimental diets) and water.
Prior to inclusion in the study, semen examination, body weight and
blood biochemical parameters were assessed to ensure that all previous
variables were in normal limits. All results were noted to be the baseline
measurements (pretreated rabbits, week 0).
Rabbits were divided into four equal groups (A, B, C and D), ten
rabbits for each.
