Abstract Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a severe form of interstitial lung diseases which is characterized by bad prognosis and has limited therapeutic options. Fibrosis occurs due to replacement of normal lung tissue with excessive extracellular matrix which is progressive and not degradable; this leads to respiratory failure and death. Pathogenesis of this disease is complex; as fibrosis occurs due to disorganized healing process in response to tissue injury with the aid of different factors such as cytokines, growth factors and oxidative stress which mediate crosstalk between epithelium, endothelium, fibroblasts and different inflammatory cells that aims healing, but this process become disorganized and leads to fibrosis with damage of the organ. The aim of present work is to investigate the anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic effect of Metformin on lung fibrosis induced by Bleomycin. |
