Abstract S eroma is a frequent problem after mastectomy and axillary lymph node dissection. Seroma is associated with pain, discomfort, impaired mobilization and repeated aspirations, often resulting in a surgical site infection. from the beginning of June 2013 till the end of October 2015, forty 40 patients with breast carcinoma were admitted in Ain shams University Hospitals. Those included in the study were divided into 2 groups • group A (breast cancer patients treated by MRM): 20 patients. • group B (breast cancer patients treated by MRM followed by axillary exclusion technique): 20 patients. The evaluation was based upon history taking, investigation (laboratory, radiological and biopsy) and evaluation of the seroma formation. We found that, there was significant decrease in the total drainage volume by about 650 ml after application of the axillary exclusion technique. Also a significant decrease in patients complicated by seroma; around 30%. The only disadvantage of this technique is the prolongation of the operative time around 24.5 minutes. In the study we concluded that our technique of axillary exclusion has resulted in significantly reduced drainage volumes and fewer seromas. |
