Abstract Post-operative obstructive jaundice constitutes a great proplem in the field of surgery. This essay go briefely with the different aspects of this subject and it includes a complete anatomical study for the biliary tracts both inside and outside the liver. It also includes the causes of post-operative obstructive jaundice especialy two important surgical causes which are, obstruction caused by biliary stones and the obstruction caused by injury of the biliary ducts and the effects of this obstruction on the bile ducts, liver, kidney and all the vital processes of the body. This essay showed the in1portance of clinical examination to diagnose the type of obstruction, it also showed the recent invistigatory methods, and methods of investigation by ultra sound, CT scan or by the use of fiberoptic endoscopes and situations for the use of each method and also the defects in the use of some of them. This essay also showed the role of these different methods in accurate diagnosis of the site, shape, extent and the type of the obstructing factor in cases of obstructive saundice. And it includes the different methods of surgical treatment and discussed the alternatives of the surgical treatment such as the use of fiberoptic endoscope in stone extraction front the bile ducts in some cases. Lastly, it includes some of the recent methods in treatmen t of obstructive jaundice such as the use of fine tubes which can be inserted through the liver or through the fiberoptic endoscopes to be passed from the site of obstruction and help in the drainage of bile juice and the use of these tubes for surgical preparation or its use pern1enantly in some other advanc cases. |
