Abstract

Software Defined Radio (SDR) is an flexible radio architecture that is organized to adjust different signals, frequency bands and wireless standards such as Global System of Mobile communications (GSM) by modifying the physical layer performance via changes in its software.
In this thesis, The baseband and passband sections of GSM wireless receiver in which Source Decoding, Channel Decoding, De-interleaver, Demodulation and Frequency De-hopping (FH) have been designed, simulated and tested using SDR and then implemented in hardware using Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP N210).
The four models have been evaluated from the perspectives of Bit Error Rates (BER)for different demodulation schemes explicitly, Binary Frequency Shift Keying (BFSK), Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK), Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK), and Eight Phase Shift Keying (8PSK). These models have been evaluated considering an additive white Gaussian noise channel (AWGN).
The performance of the receiver has been analyzed by comparing the input and output waveforms with /without FH. Also the performance of BFSK modulation\demodulation as part of receiver is analyzed by implementing it using USRP N210 for real time implementation. Finally, the simulation results and the results obtained from implementing the BFSK on USRP N210 platform are presented and discussed.
