Abstract

This present study concerned with taxonomy and molecular data of cockroaches in Egypt.
VI.I. Taxonomic studies:
This taxonomic study deals with revision of Egyptian cockroaches through collecting specimens from available localities and examined the specimens preserved in the main Egyptian insect collections (ASUC, CUC, MAC, and AUC). In addition to some specimens in foreign museums through their photos available in the website of the modern cockroach catalogue (Blattodea species file).
This study recorded 3 species for the first time to the Egyptian fauna: Periplaneta brunnea Burmeister, Pycnoscelus indicus (Fabricius) and Heterogamisca boliveri (Adelung), raising the number of Egyptian cockroaches to 23 compared with the previous study of Shaumar, (1974). The Egyptian cockroaches classified into four families; Blaberidae (4species under 3 genera), Blattidae (5species under 3genera), Ectobiidae (5 species under 5 genera) and Corydiidae (9 species under 5 genera).
Collecting and identifying of cockroach species were carried out; revising and examining the specimens in main Egyptian collections were done with identification of the specimens in our side collections. For each taxon keys, synonyms, diagnostic characters, material examined local and world distribution, and colored pictures were given. The updated lists of Egyptian cockroaches’ species were introduced.
Male genital dissection was carried out for nine taxa: Periplanata americana (Linnaeus), Periplaneta brunnea Burmeister, Blattella germanica (Linnaeus), Chorisia reducta (Walker), Matabelina treitliana (Werner), Supella longipalpa (Fabricius), Hemelytroblatta cerverae (Bolívar), Hemelytroblatta dumonti (Chopard) and polyphaga aegyptiaca (Linnaeus), colored photos for genital sclerites were given.
VI.I. Molecular studies:
DNA was extracted from legs of specimens and PCR was set up. DNA sequence was obtained directly from the purified PCR product using the cycle sequencing method. Gene sequence of 28s nuclear gene was detected to Chorisia reducta (Walker) for the first time, gene bank lack from any genomic information to Chorisia reducta (Walker). The sequence length was 512bp, this sequence blasted with the data present on the gene bank to selected cockroach species, the data analyzed using MEGA 6 (Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis) and constructing the phylogenetic tree for studying the relation between Chorisia reducta (Walker) and other species which are represented in Egyptian fauna.
