Abstract Pregnancy has been known to increase susceptibility to gingival inflammation. New evidence supports an association between the gingival health status and increased serum levels of female sex hormones during pregnancy. Aim: The aim of the present study is to assess the relationship between serum levels of estrogen and progesterone in relation to its possible effect on gingival tissue health throughout pregnancy period. Conclusion: pregnancy gingivitis has direct correlation with the increase of serum levels of estrogen and progesterone hormones. Bacterial plaque is important for the initiation of gingival inflammation during pregnancy. Therefore, the maintenance of oral hygiene before and during pregnancy is very important in order to reduce the incidence and the severity of gingival inflammation and preserve gingival tissue health during pregnancy period. |
