Abstract

A literature survey on transition metal complexes of hydrazones was made, the interest in the study of hydrazones and their metal complexes was mainly due to their biological activities. Also a literature survey on ion-flotation was conducted, and clarifies this technique and its role for the removal of the toxic metal ions from aqueous solutions. New ligand was prepared and used in this study namely, 3-(2-(4-(dimethylamino)benzylidene)hydrazinyl)-3-oxo-N-(thiazol-2-yl)propanamide (H2L) The preparation of this ligand (H2L), and its metal complexes with different transition metals salt of Ni(II), Co(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), Cu(II), Pb(II), Hg(II) and Fe(III) Were described. Elemental analyses, thermal (TG and DTG), spectral (IR, 1H,13C NMR, UV-visible, MS), and magnetic measurements were used to characterize the isolated solid complexes. Also, computational studies for all compounds were done. Moreover, ion-flotation separation technique, and biological activity as antimicrobial , antifungal and antioxidant were carried out. In general, three types of solid complexes were isolated in which the ligand behaved in neutral, mononegative and /or binegative manner. The electronic spectra and magnetic measurements for the isolated complexes indicated that all complexes had octahedral structure except for [CuL(H2O].2H2O complex had square planar structure. Computational studies for all compounds were carried out to confirm the geometry of the isolated complexes. Thermal decomposition of some solid complexes under an atmosphere of nitrogen was investigated. Moreover, biological activity (Antifungal, antimicrobial and antioxidant) for the ligand and its metal complexes under investigation were carried out. The result showed that [Ni(H2L)(H2O)Cl2].2H2O complex had higher biological activity than the other synthesized compound Finally, Ion-flotation separation of metal ions from aqueous solutions using 2-aminothiazole derivative as chelating agent and oleic acid as surfactant are carried out. It has included a study of the impact of different factors controlling the separation of Cd2+, Cu2+, Pb2+, and Zn2+ ions from different aqueous media , the data showed that about 100% of the metal ions were removed by ion-flotation process at pH 7 and room temperature (25±2oC).
