Abstract

Background: The Medical Administration of Ain Shams University (MAASU) is concerned with the health care services for the university students. Health services include all services dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of disease, or the promotion, maintenance and restoration of health. They include personal and non-personal health services. Health services are the most visible functions of any health system, both to users and the general public. Service provision refers to the way inputs such as money, staff, equipment and drugs are combined to allow the delivery of health interventions. Aim of the study: 1)To describe the promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative health program provided for Ain Shams University (ASU) students.2)To determine utilization and unmet needs of such health services by ASU students.3)To measure the degree of satisfaction of the students attending and health care providers in these services. Methods: A cross sectional study design was implemented. Participants were Ain Shams University (ASU) students in different faculties, attendants of the medical centers, the hospital inpatients and outpatients and Health care providers at the medical centers, clinics and the hospital. Two study questionnaires were prepared, one for the students and the other one for the health care workers. Both were self administered and written in the Arabic language. A non random sampling technique was adopted for selection of students in the faculties and the medical centers. All health care providers in the different medical centers and the hospital were included in the study. Results: For the medical staff overall satisfaction rate for the quality of services provided to students was 30.2% rating it by ‘good’. The total number of students interviewed was 1090 students; they were divided into two groups’ aware and unaware of the health services provided by MAASU. Their percentage accounts for 70.5% aware and 29.5% unaware of the total number of students interviewed. Giving a percentage of 54.5% of student’s utilization of the services provided and a 56 % total satisfaction for the overall MAASU services provided to university students. For the health care workers assessments for the students utilization of the health services provided accounts for 54.2%. Conclusion: The Health care services provided to Ain Shams university students are not that satisfactory for either the university students or the health care providers. The health services program provided to the Ain Shams university students needs to be developed in order to increase the awareness and the satisfaction of the students towards the health services provided to them, and to increase the health promotion of university students. Policies and procedures of the Medical Administration of Ain Shams University must be well known by all the working staff. Also programs for training and continuous education of the health care workers are needed to provide a quality monitored health services.
