Abstract

Numerous investigators had studied the clinical decision making in the critical setting but
rarely examined the workplace empowerment and clinical decision making among the nurses
within the critical care units. The current study seeks to assess the impact of workplace
empowerment on nurses’ clinical decision making in the intensive care units at New Kasr Al -
Aini Teaching Hospital. A descriptive exploratory design was utilized to achieve the aim of
the current study. The study included all staff nurses (250 nurse) working in critical care
units. Two tools were utilized to collect the data of the current study: 1- first tool; classified
to socio-demographic data sheet, and clinical decision making tool. 2-second tool;
Questionnaire designed to measure workplace empowerment. The results of the current study
showed that the clinical nurses had moderate level of workplace empowerment and clinical
decision making. A positive correlation between workplace empowerment and clinical
decision making dimensions (r=0.773, P<0.000).the study concluded that nurses had abilities
to make clinical decisions, but they controlled by many factors that restricted their abilities
as, heavy responsibilities. The study recommended that ICU nurses can be empowered to
provide optimal clinical decisions in their critical care units by increase their satisfaction and
trust as provide incentives, manage frustration and practice leadership in everyday activities.
Also, the hospital should provide educational programs to inform the hospital managers and
nursing administrators about the importance of empowerment. Finally the hospital should
encourage nurses’ participation in decisions related to workplace problems.
