Abstract

 Cases of child sexual abuse was much more frequent than child physical abuse among the examined cases by medico-legal authorities in Cairo and Giza governorates during the study period.
 There was none significant differences between Cairo and Giza governorates in the frequencies of child abuse, either sexual or physical type.
 The most common regions in Cairo referring cases of child abuse were Ain Shams and Matareya.
 The most common region referring cases of child abuse in Giza was Haram.
 The least frequent region referring cases of child abuse was Kasr El Nile were in Cairo and 6th of October in Giza.
 Although females were more predominant than males as victims of child abuse, there were non-statistically significant differences between both genders.
 School age group, followed by adolescents, represented the greatest proportion of victims of child sexual abuse.
 Toddlers represented the greatest proportion of victims of child physical abuse.
 There was statistical significant difference in gender distribution between age groups of victims of child sexual abuse; females were more frequent in adolescents and toddlers groups while males were more frequent in school age and preschool age groups.
 Stranger persons were the most frequent perpetrator of child sexual abuses in all age groups regardless the gender.
 The next most common perpetrators of a child sexual abuse were adult friends of female victims and neighbors of male victims.
 Anal injuries were evident in 122 cases (15% of the included victims of child sexual abuse) while vaginal injuries were evident in 114 cases (26.6% of the included female victims of sexual abuse).
 The greatest frequency of anal injury was in preschool age group.
 The greatest frequency of vaginal injuries was in adolescents group while there was no cases with vaginal injures in toddlers group.
 Acute injuries (both anal and vaginal) were more frequent than chronic injuries in all age groups except adolescents group where chronic injuries were more frequent than acute injuries.
 Concomitant physical violence was evident in 14.9 % of victims of child sexual abuse. Contusions were the most common type of wound and limbs were the most common body areas affected by physical injuries in these cases.
 Females were more predominant than males as victims of physical abuse in all age groups although there was none significant difference in gender distribution between age groups.
 The first degree relatives were the most common perpetrators of child physical abuse in all age groups.
 Abrasions and contusions, followed by burns, were the most common types of wounds in all age groups of victims of child physical abuse.
 Limbs (upper and lower) were the most frequent injured body regions in all age groups of the included cases of child physical abuse, except for toddlers where the head was the most frequent injured area.
 Mortality represented 9.9% of the included cases (91 cases). Head injuries were the most common cause of death in all age groups except adolescents where hemorrhage was the most common cause of death.
 Most of deaths were the victims of physical abuse (90 cases, 98.8%). There was only one case of sexual abuse died due to asphyxia (1.1% of deaths).
