Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to present applicable solutions to the Egyptian container terminals generally and Port Said container terminal especially as a case study to improve the performance and upgrade the level of services which presented to the shipping companies. These applicable solutions can be accomplished through sharing with private sector. In case of adopting these solutions, the expected time for accomplishing this mission is two years with approximate cost two billion Egyptian pound. Sharing with private sector is the preferred in this case especially shipping company or global terminal operating company. The thesis contains six chapters for illustrating the activities at the global container terminals with focusing on Port Said containers terminal explaining the problems and obstacles at Port Said terminals and the applicable solutions to develop and improve its performance.
Chapter one Contains an Introduction to the importance of global maritime transport, capacity of global fleet of container ships the role of container terminals at the ports.
Chapter two is illustrating the development of container ships since 1956 with the 1st steel box handled on general cargo ship. These steel boxes are used to pre-stuffed cargo to be ready before ship arrival to minimize time of ship at the ports. At the same time, some general cargo and tanker ships have been converted to be used for containers transport. With 1960’s end, 1st generation of container ship had been designed with about 1000 Twenty Feet Equivalent Unit (TEU). The container ships have been developed and we have now in service some ships with more than 12000 TEU capacity.
Chapter three is discussing different types of container terminal’s cranes and equipment, the function of each type and the basics to choose the best system of equipment to achieve the requirements.
Chapter four Explains the operation at container terminals, the role of shipping agencies and the flow of documents between the shipping agencies and container terminals
Chapter five demonstrates the Korean experience in developing its port and container terminals in Bussan to become No. five globally in throughput.
Chapter six illustrates the situation of Port Said containers terminal and explains the problems, obstacles and applicable solutions to develop and improve the performance.
