Abstract Streptozotocin injection leads to the degeneration of the Langerhans islet beta cells (Ikebukuro et al., 2002). Streptozotocin was discovered to be particularly toxic to pancreatic β-cells that secrete insulin and has been used extensively to create animal models of diabetes, STZ selectively destroys the insulin producing β-cells by inducing necrosis and hence, it is diabetogenic (Sharma, 2010). STZ action on β-cells are accompanied by characteristic alterations in blood insulin and glucose concentrations. Lapshina et al. (2006) who reported the glucose moiety in the structure of STZ enables it to be transported through glucose transporters (GLUT 2) and insulin-producing cells that do not express this (GLUT 2) are resistant to STZ. |
