Abstract

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia worldwide with an insidious impairment of episodic memory. Vascular dementia (VaD) is the second most common among people. Sleep disorders (SD) are one of most common non cognitive symptoms in AD with prevalence up to 40%, due to degeneration of neural pathways that regulate sleep-wake patterns and sleep architecture. SD has a large impact on the life of patients with dementia and health of their caregivers. SD worsens the severity and outcome of AD. The aim of this work is to evaluate the prevalence and pattern of sleep disorders in Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia. This study had been conducted within time frame of six months on 20 AD patients and 20VaD patients diagnosed according to the DSM IV criteria (APA, 2000) recruited from outpatient clinics of Department of Neuropsychiatry as well as Psychiatry- Neurology and Neurosurgery Centre, Tanta University. Twenty healthy age, sex and BMI matched control subjects were also included. Patients and control subjects underwent complete psychiatric evaluation, including full medical history, psychiatric, physical examination and the cognitive function was evaluated by MoCA, CDR and ADL while the sleep disorders were assessed by ESS and.
