Abstract

Plant polyphenols have drawn increasing attention due to their potent antioxidant properties and their marked effects in the prevention of various oxidative stress associated diseases. The approximate chemical composition of Olea europaea L. olive pomace, Musa spp L. banana peels and Citrus senensis L. orange peels were studied. Phytochemical screening of studied plants revealed some differences in their constituents. Methanolic 70% and acetone extracts were investigated for total polyphenols and total flavonoid the results showed that olive pomace acetone and methanolic 70 % extracts had high content of these parameters. Scavenging activity of olive, banana and orange extracts against DPPH free radical and reducing power were determined and the results showed that methanolic 70 % extracts were characterized by a higher content of antioxidants compound than acetone extracts. Vitamin C was estimated by HPLC and the obtained data showed that banana peel had the lowest content. HPLC polyphenolic and flavonoids fractions in studied extracts was carried out. Antimicrobial activity of studied plants were screened for antibacterial activity. The result revealed that all of them showed an antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli – bacillus subtilis (G+) and Staphylococcus aureus- Pseudomonas aeruginosa (G-), as well as antifungal activity against Aspergillus flavus (fungus) and Candida albicans (fungus) but no activity was recorded against DMSO. Cytotoxic effect of studied extracts against human cell lines HePG2, MCF7-T47D, HCT116, PC3 and A549 was occurred. Data showed that olive pomace extract was possess very potent inhibitory activities against HePG2, MCF7, T47D and HCT116 cell lines correlated with hesperidin and syringic acid contents. The anticancer effect of olive pomace extract encourage the use of it as protective agents for normal cell line. Banana extract showed a significant anticancer effect against HePG2 and HCT116, while orange peel extract had no anticancer activities against all tested cancer cell lines it needs high concentration above 100 ppm. Kay words: Olive pomace, banana peel, orange peel, antioxidant activity, flavonoids, polyphenolic compounds, antimicrobial activity, antitumor HePG2, MCF7, T47D, HCT116, PC3 and A549.
