Abstract Some toxicological and pharmacological studies were carried out on Artemisia judaica; which is commonly used in folk medicine in Egypt. LD5o of the ethanolic extract was 9.17 g!kg b.wt., while the aqueous extract caused no mortalities in mice till 5 g!kg b.wt. in mice. Both extracts showed significant anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, but didn’t show antipyretic effect. The plant extracts showed no significant effect on urine output and had no effect on the blood pressure or pulse rate of normal rats. Moreover, the effect on blood glucose level was determined in nornial and diabetic rats. The res.ults showed that the plant extracts had significant lowering effect on the blood sugar level of diabetic animals, but had no effect on blood glucose of normal animals. Both extracts showed significant hepatoprotective effect on the intoxicated liver using CCI4 in rats. In addition; the ethanolic extract showed significant antioxidant activity in vitro, which was more prominent than that of the aqueous extract. Prolonged administration of the plant extracts for two months showed no adverse effect on blood picture, but there were slight changes in the serum biochemical parameters, with observed decrease in body weight gain of the treated groups when compared to control group. Th,e plant extracts showed inhibitory activity in the isolated rabbit intestine, and the’ir action was simiiar to that of nicotine. They also showed varying inhibitory effect on the uterine motility of rats at different stages of estrus cycle. |
