Abstract

This descriptive study employs content analysis of photos, lexis and sentences to reveal and verify the needed data. Sentence is used as the unit of analysis for investigating civic issues except while investigating gender issues two units of analysis are used which are word and sentence units. An inventory of the required civic issues was prepared by the researcher and validated by jury members and then used as a content analysis checklist. The inventory consisted of five main civic issues and thirty sub-issues. The results of the study reveal that most civic issues are not properly covered throughout the textbooks. Whole categories are ignored such as political issues since the textbooks do not provide learners with theoretical or practical knowledge about such issues. Regarding public issues, the textbooks run short of reflecting the Egyptian society, promoting national unity and citizenship. Moreover, they reinforce gender inequality and ignore social problems. Global issues are not properly addressed and the representation of environmental issues is very limited and focuses on theoretical information used for mechanical drills. Learners are not allowed to identify environmental issues from their point of view, rank them, clarify the cultural values causing them or find solutions. The main focus of textbooks is to develop learner’s intercultural communicative competence and raise students’ awareness of the importance of tourism and helping tourists. This reflects the effect of the state’s policy on EFL textbooks. It is also worth mentioning that the textbooks succeed in promoting certain values (helping others, cooperation, politeness, and moderation in food, sleep and exercise). In sum, Hello Series textbooks needs to be developed to provide learners with appropriate and important civic knowledge and skills.
