Abstract

This present work was conducted to examine the effect of famous three chemical acaricides that applied in-hives of honeybee against varroa mites (Varroa destructor) on fertility queen of honeybee (Apis milefera L) and also determine the role of queen excluder as a new technique to protect queen fertility from harmful direct contact of these acaricides during treatment periods of Varroa mites. This study was carried out throughout two successive years, starting from November 2012 to October 2014.The present experiments were carried out in a private apiary in Idkuo region under condition of El-Boheira Governorate, Egypt. Fifty six moderate colonies of local Egyptian race (Egyptian Carniolan hybrid) were set up in standard Langthtroth hives with slight modification to facilitate fixing queen excluder within two incisions in brood chamber. Four colonies as replicates were used for each chemical concentration in addition to one colony as control. In each tested colony: the queen colony was temporary confined on a single comb beside the hive entrance by vertical queen excluder for a treatment period. Treatments of all replicates were applied in randomized complete block design (RCBD). Comparison between the means was detected using the least significant difference (LSD). To estimate the fluctuations and changes in fertility of honeybees’ queen, we recorded the areas of capped worker brood cells with square inches at the intervals of 12 days and invert them to a number of worker brood cells and megurerment of hony production.
