Abstract

The present study was carried out at constant conditions of (30 ± 1˚C and 65±5% R.H.) at Plant Protection Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Zagazig University, to study the effect of gamma radiation (Cs-137) at different doses from 1-120 Gy on the eggs stage (one and three days old) of Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) and malformations of adults (%) and loss of weight (%). Also, the effect of some volatile plant oils and extracts were used on this insect. The obtained data are summarized as follows: 1- Egg one day old: The sterility of emerged adults was increased by increasing the dose of radiation, the lowest and the highest percent (56.87 and 100 %) were recorded at 1 Gy and 10 to 120 Gy, respectively, 2- Egg three days old: The highest percent (100 %) was recorded at 20 Gy to 120 Gy, and no emerged adult at the doses from 20 Gy to 120 Gy. 3- The highest percentage of malformations (6.67%) was recorded at 5 Gy and 10 Gy, while the lowest percent (0.03%) was recorded at 2 Gy. 4- There were many malformations in antenna, legs, fore and hind wings for 1Gy of 1 day old egg. 5- The normal female reproductive system was containing two ovaries each consist six ovarioles. Borsa copulatrix, two Calyx, two lateral oviducts, spermatheca, spermathecal gland and vagina.6- The irradiated females ovaries form 1day old eggs were consists of bursa appear, bursa enlarged, ovarioles reduced, no calyx (empty) with 1,2,3,5 Gy. 7- The irradiated females ovaries form 3-days old eggs were consists of bursa appear, ovarioles reduced, calyx without mature eggs, no calyx, bursa exist enlarged, no ovarioles appeared with 1,2,3,5 10 Gy. 8- The highest fecundity (63.67 eggs/ female) was recorded in cowpea seeds treated with thyme oil at 0.5% and the lowest fecundity (2.67 eggs) at 2.0% on treated with rosemary oil. 9- No larval penetrations (0.0%) into seeds with all volatile plant oils at different concentrations except (7.73%) at 0.05% of thyme oil. 10- The highest fecundity (38.67 eggs) was recorded at 0.5% and decreased to (11.33 eggs) at 2% with aloe aqueous extract. 11- The highest percentage of loss weight (3.39%) was recorded at 0.5% of clove oil and the lowest one (1.15%) at 2% of aloe aqueous extract. 12- The highest feeding deterrence index (FDI) was 36.83% as concerns aloe aqueous extract and the lowest one (19.65%) was recorded with clove oil.
