Abstract

Tomato is one of the world’s most important vegetables. Important of tomatoes not only because of the large amount consumed, but also because of their high health and nutritional contributions to humans. In the human diet, it is an important source of micronutrients, certain minerals, carboxylic acids (ascorbic, malic, fumaric and oxalic acids) and antioxidants contents (lycopene, phenols and vit. C.). Generally, cherry tomato consumption has recently been demonstrated to possess healthy benefits because of its rich content of phytonutrients. Tomato is one of the most limiting factors that influence the fruits economic value is the relatively short shelf- life period caused by pathogens attacked especially black rot and gray mold caused by Alternaria alternata ( Fr.) Keissl and Botrytis cinerea Fr. Pers., respectively. Screening of cherry tomato fruit rot spoilage diseases in different Egyptian governorates namely, El- Sharkia, Ismailia,Giza and Alexandria was carried out during two 2012/ 2013 and 2013/ 2014 growing seasons. The pathogenicity test of catalina cherry tomato fruit cultivar confirmedthat A. alternata and B. cinerea were the most pathogenic fungi of spoilage diseases ( black spot and gray mold respectively) .The Isolation from diseased cherry tomatoes proved the presence of Alternaria alternara (FR.) Keissl and Botrytis cinerea (Fr. Res.). The best results of affectingand controlling the cherry tomatoes spoilage incidence and diseases severity percentages and quality parameters was obtained by the combination between the level 3 of modified atmosphere ( 12% CO2+ 6 % O2 ) and cool storage condition ( 7º C± 1 and 90% RH ± 3). The essential oils (black seed, fenugreek, cinnamon, spearmint, basil and thyme) coating application of cherry tomatoes could be a promising treatment to extend the shelf life of fruit and hold its quality parameters. As the storage progressed a general declining trend in all quality parameters were observed for the essential oils, which, showing a lowest weight loss, firmness, pH, vitamin c and color under MAstorage condition after 45 days of storage . Coating application of cherry tomatoes with chitosan nanoparticles lead to highly significant reduction in fruit spoilage incidence and severity percentage. Also, the use of silver nanoparticles as fruit ( Healthy and / or inoculated ) caused in shelf life extending and quality parameters stability with les occur of spoilage diseases. The transmition electron microscopy and scanning microscopy were used to detect the chitosan and silver nanoparticles dimensions and explain the mode of action of nanoparticles on the pathogenic fungi (A. alternata and B. cinerea )which aggregate of nanoparticles on mycelium and lead to mycelium malformation of both fungi, spore malformation of B. cinerea spores and prevent of A. alternata spore formation. Bio control by marine yeast (Rhodosporidium paludigenum), and Beauvria brongniartii observed promising results in controlling of cherry tomatoes spoilage incidence and severity percentage. Our study was aimed to examine the impact of cold modified atmosphere storage conditions when combined with some physical and / or chemical fruit treatments, nanoparticles of chitosan and silver to investigate the efficacy of these combination to control cherry tomatoes decay caused by A. alternata and B. cinerea. Frits quality parameters improvement and shelf – life extension were also studies.
