Abstract

Experiments were carried out through two years (2014 and 2015) at Department of Agricultural Engineering, Faculty of Agriculture, Zagazig University to construct and evaluate the performance of a combination machine (chopping and mixing) for cutting some farm residues (rice straw, sweet potatoes vines, peanut vines), and mixing the chopped residues with feed additives to produce low-cost animal feed. The constructed combination machine consists mainly of chopping unit, intermediate-preparing unit and mixing unit. Theoretical analysis was conducted to estimate power required for operating the machine, chopper shaft diameter and mixer shaft diameter. The performance of both chopping unit and mixing unit was studied individually, and then the performance of the whole machine was studied under different batch sizes. The experimental results reveal the following: 1) Recycling farm residues by converting them into valuable products is of great importance to avoid negative effects of pollution on both human health and environment. 2) It is recommended to use the manufactured combination machine for producing low cost animal feed. 3) It is recommended to operate chopping unit of the combination machine under the following speed conditions:  Cutting drum speed of about 1520 rpm corresponding to (33.41 m/s) for different farm residues  Feeding drum speed at (113, 75, 113 rpm) that given (283.15, 400 and 320 kg/h) for rice straw, sweet potatoes vines and peanut vines, respectively. 4) It is recommended to operate mixing unit of the combination machine under the following speed conditions:  Mixing speed of about 30 rpm corresponding to (1.55 m/s). 5) It is recommended to operate the combination machine at material batch size of 700 kg under the recommended speeds (cutting drum speed of 1520 rpm, feeding drum speed of 113 rpm and mixing speed of 30 rpm).
