Abstract

The larynx is one of the most common organs subjected to anatomical variations among the human body organs. That would explain the high variability of patients’ symptoms and signs as well as the course and prognosis in different laryngeal pathologies which have always been a mystery for laryngologists. Different studies were done trying to identify different anatomical variations of the larynx and their significance, with special emphasis on the cricoid cartilage and cricoarytenoid joint in an attempt to tailor different adequate surgical techniques for management of different laryngeal lesions, mostly vocal fold paralysis One of the most valuable studies was that performed by Abd-El-Fattah et aI in 2006, in which they studied the vocal fold length and the distance between the vocal process tip and the upper border of the cricoid cartilage trying to establish the anatomical relationship between the arytenoids and cricoid cartilages and apply these findings to design an arytenoidectomy based on sound anatomical basis. The study was held on the basis of endoscopic measurements and fresh specimen study. A fourth complex was documented by Abd-AI-Fattah et a1, namely the cricoarytenoid cartilaginous complex, dominated by the configuration of the cricoid and the location of its widest transverse dimension, centered around the vocal process of the arytenoids and its merge with the body, excluding the cricoarytenoid joint. The aim of the work was to assess the effect of variations of the cricoid and arytenoid cartilages as well as the cricoarytenoid joint on the presentation as well as the vocal fold position in patients with vocal fold immobility.
