Abstract A total of 150 random samples of milk and some milk products including: market milk, soft cheeses (Kareish and Fayoumy cheese) and ice cream (large and small scales) 30 of each, were collected from different places in Fayoum city, Egypt. The samples were examined bacteriologically for the isolation, identification and enumeration of S. aureus also for detection of MRSA. The prevalences of S. aureus on Mannitol salt agar were 46.7, 63.3, 36.7, 83.3 and 0% from the examined market milk, Kareish cheese, Fayoumy cheese, small scale ice cream and large scale ice cream samples, respectively, the average counts were 5.1×104, 2.6×105, 1.1×105, 6.5×104 and 0 CFU/ml or g, respectively. MRSA was isolated in the prevalences of 16.7, 33.3, 16.7, 26.7 and 0% from the examined market milk, Kareish cheese, Fayoumy cheese, small scale ice cream and large scale ice cream samples, respectively, while MRSA % from the isolated S. aureus were 35.7, 52.6, 45.5, 32.0 and 0%, respectively. The public health significance of the organism and the precautions, which should be taken to control this organism in dairy industry as well as the recommended sanitary measures, were also discussed. |
