Abstract

Aim: Assess the effect of early oral hydration on post cesarean section outcomes. Method: Design: A quasi-intervention research design was utilized. Setting: Study conducted at postpartum inpatient ward, Mansoura University Hospital during the period from September 2015 to February 2016. Subjects: A purposive sample consisted of 80 women who underwent primary elective cesarean section selected according to the inclusion criteria. Tools: Two tools were used for data collection (Structured Interview Questionnaire Schedule and Satisfaction with time of oral hydration was assessed by responding to one question on 3 points Likert scale,). Results revealed that The intervention group required less time to assume semi-sitting position (3.6±0.6 vs. 8.6±1.6), walk (4.8±0.8 vs. 10.1±0.6), and initiate breast feeding (4.2±0.6 vs. 10±2.1) compared to the control group. (p <0.001). Difference observed was highly statistically significant (p <0.001). Conclusion: Early oral hydration was an effective option to reduce the time required to return to normal bowel function, ambulation, and discharge from the hospital Recommendations: Early oral intake of fluids and food should be encouraged early gradually after cesarean section. Emphasis on early oral intake of fluids and food after CS should be made on broad scale all over different hospitals in Egypt, in an attempt to remove the old concept and routine of post cesarean oral intake restriction.
