Abstract

Neonatal Sepsis is one of the most common infectious conditions during the neonatal period, and it is still a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, despite the outstanding development of neonatology in recent years. It is more common in preterm than full term due to immaturity of immune system and its protection mechanisms against infections, So the gestitional ages and maturity are very important factor in the course of infection and the prognosis of sepsis. (Vergnano,2011)
Defensins are cationic antimicrobial peptides .They contribute to the host defense against microbial invation. (Hotchkiss et al.,2003)
The aim of this work was to detect, evaluate the impaction of human beta defensin 2 in cord blood of preterm and full term neonates with sepsis and to compare its level in different gestitional ages.
This study included 80 neonates which was divided into three groups. group I included 40 preterm neonates (28 males, 12 females), group II 20 late preterm neonates (12 males, 8 females) and 20 full term neonates (16 males, 4 females).
