Abstract

Background: HIV is transmitted primarily via unprotected sexual intercourse (including anal and oral sex), contaminated blood transfusions, hypodermic needles, and from mother to child during pregnancy, delivery, or breastfeeding. Aim of the work: The aim of the work is to determine the clinical manifestations and demographic characteristics of 100 consecutive HIV patients admitted to Abbasia fever hospital starting from February 2015. Subjects and Methods: Study design: The present study was conducted in a cross sectional manner on patients infected with HIV virus who were admitted to Abbasia Fever Hospital. Diagnosis depends on HIV antibodies positivity by ELISA and confirmed by western blot test. Results: chronic diarrhea was the most reported manifestations in the studied patients. It was seen in 30% of cases. The respiratory manifestations were seen in 28% of cases. Conclusion: The most common presenting symptom is chronic diarrhea and the most common complication is recurrent infection. Recommendations: Further studies are needed to assess the actual situation of HIV infection in Egypt.
