Abstract

The experiment was carried out in the plastic house of the Arid Land Agricultural Graduate Studies and Research Institute, Faculty of Agriculture, Ain Shams University, during the two successive seasons of 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 to evaluate the effect of grafting on productivity and quality of tomato grown in Nutrient Film Technique. The experiment contained two rootstocks of tomato cultivars, i.e. VT.916 and R.X.010 and rootstocks of eggplant cultivar, i.e. Solanum melongena Baladi plus control one (cultivar tomato of R.X.010). Moreover, tomato plant of each grafting rootstocks were trained as a single and/or double stemmed system. The important obtained results could be summaries as following:
1- Effect of rootstock sources :
 The grafting tomato on rootstock named R.X.010 gained the highest values of plant height, leaves number and stalk diameter over the control in first and second seasons. Using Solanum melongena Baladi as rootstock came in the second order. On the contrary, the lowest values of the previous parameters recorded with the control treatment.
 The heaviest total and early tomato yield were recorded in both experiments with using the rootstock of R.X.010, but the opposite was found when using the control treatment.
 The highest content of N , P and K in leaves tissue of tomato plant recorded their peaks when using R.X.010 as rootstock, followed in descending order by that rootstock of Solanum melongena Baladi, then V.T.916 and lastly with no grafting plants ( control ).
 There were no great variation between the two rootstock (R.X.010 and Solanum melongena baladi) with regard the content of leaf chlorophylls, the average fruit weight, the values of firmness, as well as ascorbic acid and total soluble

solids. where in most cases the statistical analyses recoded no significant differences within the two mentioned rootstocks.
2- Effect of training system :
 Training tomato plant on one branch had a taller plants, thicker stalk, the heavier tomato fruit if compared with that plants which trained on two branches.
 The higher leaves number, heavier early and total fruit yield were corrected whit using the trained system of two branches.
 The higher N% content in tissues of tomato leaves were recorded with training plants on two branches.
 The training system had no great effect on P% and/or K% contents.
 The training tomatoes as one branch gained the higher green leaves, higher firmness and TSS values compared with that plants trained on two branches.
3- Effect interaction between rootstocks and training methods :
 The tallest tomato plants, thickness stalks, the biggest tomato fruits, and the higher values of firmness and TSS, all these parameters were associated with that plants which grafted as R.X.010 and trained on one stalk. On the contrary, the no grafted plants and that trained on one stalk gave the lowest values of the previous characters.
 The highest leaves number, total and early tomato yield as well as the highest content of nitrogen in leaves tissue were recorded with using the rootstock of R.X.010 and training on two stalks. The lowest values of that above measurements were recorded with that plants no grafted and trained on one branches.
 The interaction treatments had no significant effect on values of P%,
