Abstract

Down syndrome (DS) is a common chromosomal disorder, affecting 1 per 1000 babies born each year.. Children with DS have an increased prevalence of overweight and obesity (30–50%) and have a high prevalence of obesity-related secondary conditions). In Egypt, there is estimated risk of 2285 DS births annually Individuals with DS may be at increased risk for obesity due to phenotypic features associated with their disability. These features include hypothyroidism, muscle hypotonia . This combination is likely to result in decreased energy expenditure. Conclusion: OD group showed significantly higher median value of WC and W/H ratio compared to studied groups. NOD group showed significantly lower mean value of HT and median value of WT as compared with NOC. OD group showed significantly higher median values of Fasting insulin and HOMA-IR and significant lower median values of FBG/FI and QUICKI in OD versus NOD. NOD group showed insignificantly higher median values of FBG, FI and HOMA-IR and insignificantly lower median values of FBG/F.I and QUICKI compared to NOC group DS groups showed less favorable lipid profile compared to controls NOD group showed significantly higher mean values of TC, LDL-C, and Non HDL-C compared to NOC group.
