Abstract

chronic renal failure can elicit a wide spectrum of oral manifestations in the hard and soft tissues. Moringa oleifera leaves have been reported to be a rich source of β-carotene, protein, vitamin C, calcium and potassium. Many studies have demonstrated the efficacy of Fluoride (CPP-ACPF) in inhibiting demineralization and promoting remineralization of enamel and dentin in vitro. Objectives: This study was designed to determine the effect of renal insufficiency on patients’ teeth (enamel and dentin) and study biological effects of topical application of Moringa oleifera extract versus fluoride on teeth extracted from uremic patients. Materials and Methods: twenty five sound posterior teeth from healthy and uremic patients were used in this study. The specimens were divided into 3 groups. Control group: The teeth were etched using phosphoric acid gel 37%. Fluoride group: Specimens were etched then exposed to CPP-ACPF paste. Moringa oleifera group: Specimens were etched then exposed to Moringa oleifera extract. Each group was subdivided into 2 subgroups; subgroup A: healthy patients’ teeth specimens, and subgroup B: uremic patients’ teeth specimens. By using SEM each specimen was tested for enamel surface roughness, the diameter of the dentinal tubules. Calcium and phosphorus levels were tested in enamel and dentin using EDAX. Results: Enamel of uremic patients’ teeth showed irregular enamel surface with deep depressions and pitting. Dentin showed different shaped outlines and diameter of dentinal tubules. Specimens treated with Moringa and CPP-ACPF showed significant decrease in enamel surface roughness and narrowing of dentinal tubules, they also showed significant increase in calcium and phosphorus levels. Conclusion: CRF affect the mineral content of enamel and dentin of permanent teeth. This appeared on ultrastructural levels. Moringa oleifera extract has a remineralizing and protective effect similar to application of CPP-ACPF paste in preventing enamel and dentin erosions.
