Abstract

Nowadays Violence pervades societies (rural and urban as well as squatter within
which adolescents grow up) and has been recognized as a major health problem all over

adolescents in all settings face extraordinary risks of various forms of violence daily in
their homes, street, schools, media, neighborhoods, and communities at large and from
everybody not only their parents, but also their siblings, friend’s, strangers in the streets,
and their school teachers.

earch questions are
• To what extent the problem of violence is present among adolescents?
• Do the demographic characteristics affect the type of violence in rural, urban and
.squatter areas?

qualitative methodology (Phenomenological multi-method component triangulated design)
Regarding the study setting , the study was carried out in 74 general public
preparatory schools that were randomly selected from the seven educational zones in
Alexandria (47 schools representing urban areas) another 10 schools for rural areas and 17
schools representing squatter areas).
The target populations for this research were male and female adolescents from
age group ranged from 12 to 15 who were attending the above mentioned settings during
the academic year (2009-2010). Quantitative data were collected from 1080 adolescents (a
total of 360 from each area equally 180 male and 180 female adolescents). On the other
dhan, the subjects for qualitative data were approximately 46 adolescents (selected
randomly to participate in the Focus group Discussions).
